one-third of this protein to be in molecular weight range 20,000-40,000 (fraction BJC). BJC, prepared from 9 liters of urine by gel filtration, was chromatographed on carboxymethylcellulose. Two proteins were eluted from the resin in pure form (as shown by zone and immunoelectrophoresis) in yields representing 8 and 3 mg/liter of urine: BjC1 and BJC2. Their amino acid compositions were identical. BJC1 conitained 61% carbohydrate (33% hexose, 11% sialic acid, 13% glucosamine, 5% galactosamine). RJC2 contained onefourth to one-half as much of each carbohydrate. Molecular weight of BJC1 was estimated at 29,000 by gel filtration. Neither glycoprotein reacted with rabbit antiserum to normal human serum. Antiserum to BJC1 was made in the rabbit. Tmmunoelectrophoresis with this antiserum slhowed a faint precipitin line, corresponding in mobility to BJC1, in normal human plasma, and a stronger line in most leukemic plasmas. By immunodiffusion, BJC1 was not detectable in normal human urine, but a positive reaction occurred in the following conditions: leukemia, 64-72%; other types of disseminated neoplastic disease, 36-78%; regional ileitis, 45%; ulcerative colitis, 38%; tuberculosis, 33%; during the 1st wk after major surgery, 33%. BJC2 was found in the urine by immunoelectrophoresis in 10% of patients with neoplastic disease and was not observed in urine of other patients or in human plasma. Amino acid composition, carbohydrate content, and antigenic specificity indicate BJC1 is a previously unrecogniized member of the system of normal human Received for putblication 9 JuIAy 1973 and in revised form 22 October 197?. plasma glycoproteins. l ike certain other glycoproteins, its plasma concentrationi frequently increases in patients with neoplastic disease, chronic iniflammatory (lisease, or tuberculosis and after surgery. Because molecular weight is 29,000, increased plasma concenitration readily cauises its appearalnce in the urine.

Generalized granuloma annulare in a patient with myelocytic leukemia and chronic hepatitis B virus infection.

Granuloma annulare is a granulomatous disorder of the dermis and subcutaneous tissue, with different clinical types. Generalized granuloma annulare is a rarely encountered clinical entity. We describe a 60-year-old woman with a 4-month history of generalized annular lesions. She had a history of myelocytic leukemia and chronic hepatitis B virus infection. To date, both acute myelocytic leukemia...

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia followed by chronic myelocytic leukemia.

Second hematologic malignancies occur rarely in patients previously treated for leukemia. This report describes a patient with acute lymphoblastic leukemia who remained in complete remission for 5 yr and then developed chronic myelocytic leukemia (CML). The original lymphoblasts were associated with a partial deletion of chromosome 21, while CML was associated with a classic Philadelphia marker...

Ultrastructural histochemical alteration of the plasma membrane in chronic myelocytic leukemia.

Ultrastructural histochemical evaluation of the surface of normal human blood and bone marrow cells exposed to the pyroantimonate-osmium (PAO) reaction indicated the selective binding of pyroantimonate to certain cations (calcium, magnesium, and possibly sodium) associated with the plasma membrane of neutrophilic leukocytes and their developmental forms. Other leukocytes and their precursors di...

Chronic myelogenous leukemia in ulcerative colitis

Patients diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease are known to be at an increased risk of colorectal and liver cancers and of leukemia. In fact, several forms of primary and secondary hematological malignancies were rarely observed during the clinical course of inflammatory bowel diseases. The causal relationship, if any, remains undetermined. Patients needing a prolonged treatment with immu n...

Karyotype evolution and multilineage involvement of Philadelphia chromosome-positive clones in blastic transformation of two patients with chronic myelocytic leukemia.

Simultaneous analysis of the cell morphology and karyotypes on single colonies was carried out in two patients with Philadelphia chromosome (Ph1)-positive chronic myelocytic leukemia in blastic transformation in order to clarify the origin of leukemic cells involved. Patient no. 1 was in a typical myeloblastic transformation and patient no. 2 in "basophilic transformation." Both patients exhibi...
